Romilda Vane felt faintly self-conscious beneath a parasol stained by snow and a starched crinoline dress. Her slender figure was held further in check by the pressure the corset exerted over her and her dark hair was swept back over her shoulders and adorned with ribbon.

She looked wistfully at the pirouetting couples on the dance-floor and tried not to study them too hard for fear of the situation reiterating more firmly that which she really had no interest in hearing.

It had been a terrible idea to come to the Yule Ball alone, even worse had been the notion of trying to fit in with the contemporary fashion of L'Académie de Magie Beauxbâtons, which was rooted somewhere around 1890.

With a sudden jolt of surprise, she became aware that, despite her musings on loneliness, another presence had joined her where she stood against the wall.

She turned to see Melinda Bobbin, dressed in swaths of flowing jade satin, standing beside her, her large round spectacles strangely absent from her face.

Her wavy blonde hair fell freely upon her shoulders and she seemed to glow in the dim light. Without word, she felt the other girl reach out and take hold of her hand and quietly Romilda Vane smiled to herself.

For the first time all night, she felt at last as if she were not alone.
